Hi there,

new to macs but liking what i see so far, I just finishing picking up 3 ibooks, 1 has no issues (g3 700 12"), 2nd one (g3 900 12") has the logic board video issue, but I got it working, now the third one I cant get anything out of it, it is a g3 700, 12", the one thing i do know is it has no HD, but I have one to install in it. it does get light up when I plug the power cord in, but no booting up, no chime, nothing....just wondering if i need to do anything special to it to try and see what might be the problem. I don't have any of the disks for any of the machines, but I do have the OS X install discs. any help would be much appreciated from a humble soon to be ex-windows guy?

Thanks,

Wow, that took me reading your blurb several times to comprehend your question... So you bought three iBook 700MHz G3; 1 working fine, 1 with a video problem, and 1 DOA without a hard drive installed?

Do you have the Apple Hardware Test CD? You may want to try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) on the one that won't boot. You can find the instructions for that by searching the support knowledge base at Apple's site.

If logic board is bad, you'll have to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Genius Bar to get the logic board replaced. There are very few user serviceable parts on any iBook.

For now, I would focus on the good iBook since you're 1 for 3.
Oh, a peeve -- "MAC" is a networking term "Media Access Control" which is a unique network hardware number to your computer, not to be confused with "Mac" short for Macintosh.

Thanks for the lesson.

well just an update I did manage to perform the Ibook fix with the shims to get the 2nd one working. I now have just 1 dead ibook. I took it apart and looks like there is a capacitor that has blown which may explain why it doesnt boot. I guess no one else has much experience with taking these apart and fixing them other than going to apple geniuses to get them fixed?

I just had my board reflowed by First Phase Techonlogies in Tempe, Arizona. The cost was $50.00 total cost, which I think is more than reasonable. They have a technician who has been doing this process for over 9 years. Give them a call 1-480-967-1100. Ask for Bobby or Tom.
