Ever since I received this iBook G4 (Final Revision before the Macbook) as a replacement for a broken iBook the volume and sound controls have always acted somewhat odd. Volume control lags, hitting the volume up or down produces an audio pop, then randomly jumps to audio level. The other related issue is the L and R balance. At random the balance may switch to Left, and other times switch to Right, without any software intervention. I was wondering, has anyone else experienced such a strange problem with their iBook or any Mac in general and figured out what the cause was?

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test - extended test from the Install DVD that came with your machine?

I've seen bad memory cause *very* strange symptoms in weird situations.

That's exactly what Apple figured, the RAM. So I took out the extra 512MB of Apple RAM I put in... still the popping... and I can't take out the on board RAM so here I sit... wondering why in the hell my iBook makes popping noises, and why it like the right speaker so much.

Now that you mention it, my iBook G4 (same model as yours) has the same problem. I always figured the volume control lag was just a performance lag of some kind, and the other day when I went to use headphones, the audio was only coming out of the left side. At the time I figured it was just because I used headphones, but I just checked and the built-in speakers got set to left balance just now (even after I had selected center balance the other day).

This is strange.
Currently own:
iMac 17" Core Duo 1.83GHz - 2GB RAM - 160GB HDD
MacBook 13.3" (Santa Rosa) 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo - 1GB RAM - 120GB HDD
iPod Video - 30gb - 5.5 gen.

The balance thing is a bug that has been around for YEARS. it was fixed for most users with one of the 10.4 updates - I think around 10.4.3 or so - so I haven't seen it in a while, but it was definitely around before Tiger, as well. Sporadic.

Oh well, I'll just have to live with it until I can afford a MacBook (Pro?). My poor iBook... doomed to click for the rest of its life.
