I'm considering adding a MBP to our several office computers, and need to know the fastest drive available for it, 3rd party OK. I'd like to do some Photoshop stuff outside the office, in cafes and onsite, so battery life doesn't factor much me... I can plug in.
Thanks,
nina

I'd just upgrade whatever you order to the 7,200 RPM drive. Should be fast enough. Any difference would be negligible.

Hitachi 7K200. 200GB, 7200rpm. You can get it from macsales.com. I installed it in a MBP 17" and it's faster than the Apple supplied Seagate 160GB 7200rpm.

Hey thanks... this is great!
Hitachi drives are easy to get here in Japan too.
Also 200GB is a nice size. Happy!

I'm sure You are aware that the hard drives are not considered user replaceable.

Actually, I didn't know that. We have a good tech shop here that specializes in mac. I would think they could.

Have a look here. This is just a selection of different drives at different speeds. I'd also suggest that in either case, a professional should change the harddrives.

What can I say OreoCookie, you rule... many thanks for that nifty comparison. Definately going after the Hitachi and definately will not try to install it in house.

Missing the 250GB/5400RPM drive, which has been available for a while (before that test was posted).

The only thing that seems missing from those benchmarks are some fairly normal usage patterns. That is, the 7k drives are quite fast and impressive when seeing a benchmark of sustained reads or writes but how much faster is it during normal usage.
I suspect since normal usage, means that disk access is not as long and sustained the difference will be smaller then what the benchmark is showing. Don't get me wrong, it will be faster however I wonder how much that faster.
