How is Time Machine going to work with a Macbook? Wouldn't you have to have the external harddrive attached at all times for it to back it up? The thought just crossed my mind and I was curious to see if anyone had any answers?

Every Mac (except the Mac Pro) will need an external hard drive to use Time Machine as a backup. But you only need to attach it once a day; the hourly copies are kept on the local disk.

Wouldn't a partition work in a pinch?

Well sure, but that's not really a backup... the drive dies and you're hosed.

So it does continue to run locally to take snapshots of data as it changes?

Neat!

How useless would it be if it didn't?

How about an airport disk. That is how I plan on implementing time machine.

You know, I was questioning that myself. I was starting to think that Time Machine was going to end up being a desktop-only feature.
