(1) The dimmer the backlight, the longer the battery will last. I tend to run mine at the first or second setting regardless of the power source (AC or battery) as I find that to usually be quite sufficient unless I'm in bright ambient light. Set the brightness at the lowest level where you can still comfortably see the screen; getting a little extra battery life isn't worth the eyestrain.

(2) Periodically run the battery calibration routine to calibrate the battery level circuitry. I tend to do this every three months or 30 battery cycles. A popular application for displaying general battery information is coconutBattery.

(3) Other than for the battery calibration, try not to run the battery down to 0% on a regular basis; this hurts overall battery life for Lithium-ion batteries. You can read more at the Battery University. Here you can get good info on general battery care and maintenance.

keep airport and bluetooth turned off if you're not using them. Have your energy saver options set to automatic or reduced.

There will be no difference. The power adapter is universal, meaning it accepts anything between 100-240 volts AC, 50 or 60 Hz and puts out 16.5 volts DC. All you will need is some sort of adapter to go from the US plug to the type used in Austria. Heck, stop at an Apple store, they may have the right plug that will slip on the power adapter in place of the US plug.

Does all of Europe use the same type of plug? I think the UK is different, but what about the European mainland?

Steve Gibson made a great point mentioned above that Lithium-Ion batteries (ipods, macbooks, mobile phones) like to be consitently recharged, meaning when you can plug the device into the power to put its power back to 100%. Draining it will shorten the life span of the battery.

Yeah airport n bluetooth off is a great idea n so is the screen brightness. I have been wondering if the amount of energy used to get out of sleep mode is more than just leaving it on with the lowest screen brightness. I try to shut the lid even when i know i will be using it within 5 minutes, at work (teaching drums) i can make the whole day doing this.
