the firmware update started up while I was shutting down. The MacBook powered off in the middle of the update. And I did not initiate the firmware update.
WTF? Now I've got no SuperDrive through no fault of my own.

Stupid question: Have you tried running it again?

Yes. "No updateable devices found".
Additionally, the drive will not physically accept any media of any kind.

You might look in your hard drive > Library > Receipts folder for the firmware updater. Maybe it's there. If so, delete it and try running the updater again.

Nice try but still getting the same message. I think the firmware is hosed. Dang. This is so un-Apple.

It was a poorly implemented update. IT said something to the effect of, after it is downloaded, go open and run it. I keep my mac up to date, so it was the only thing to download at the time. However, as I imagine might be your case, if you d/l other updates that require you to restart, your computer will obviously do that at the end of the update cycle. However, for me, the supredrive update ipened and ran itself automatically as soon as it downloaded. Clearly, a very poorly executed design on Apple's part...
My superdrive works fine, bucause, as I said, I didn't have to restart. However, I've heard of quite a few stories like your by now. Apple got all Microsoft on us.

UPDATE:
I'm posting this from my iPhone as Apple is replacing the Superdrive at no charge. And I didn't buy AppleCare this time.
I'm going to use the iPhone as a substitute Mac until I get the MacBook back.
So Apple is taking the high road. Very cool.

I've had the same experience. The updater started running during a restart, and now I have a dead Superdrive. Can you tell me the quickest way to get to someone at Apple who will help? I've been perusing their support page and haven't found an obvious path.
regards,
Jim
