if i upgrate my hard drive to 100 GB will i loose all my data that i have now on my 40 GB HD let me know i am confused

It depends how you do it.
What computer do you have? You most likely want to take your old drive out, put it in an enclosure (firewire) and then put in a new one. Reinstall OSX, then use migration assistant to bring your apps and prefs from the old drive.
