So my 1.83 Ghz MBP has been acting up a lot lately, and it has me really worried. The temperature, according to my iStat Nano widget, has gotten much higher under normal operating conditions, and the fan speed has doubled or tripled over what it was before. The fan gets extremely loud sometimes, and at its worst it sounds like the blades are hitting something as they spin. The fan also gets really spastic from time to time, as in it spins up and down every few seconds, over and over again for long periods of time. Nothing happened to the MacBook physically, as far as I'm aware of, to trigger this change. I also don't recall installing any new software right before this started happening, though it's been going on for a while. It was tolerable most of the time, but yesterday it got to the point where it sounded like the fan was going to burst out of the laptop entirely, so here I am.

Anyone know of similar problems, or can suggest a fix? Or am I stuck sending this thing into Apple Japan (pretty sure the warranty is out because I failed to get Apple Care...)?

Sounds like one of your fans has died.

Try Apple Hardware Test (boot from the install DVD and hold d) and see if it returns an error code.

Thanks for the suggestion. iStat Nano gives me values for both the right and left fan, and the values are clearly different from each other, which leads me to believe that they're both active. But I suppose iStat Nano might not be the most reliable indicator, eh?
