i am into video editing and such. i rip a lot of dvds and download large video files. i usually have around 70 gb left on my hard drive at any given time. today once i deleted a bunch of files i am left with 56 gb worth of space. this is very strange to me because i am 100% positive i should have somewhere around 70 gb left any ideas as to what is causing this or any solutions would be appretiated.

WhatSize is the best app I've seen to help analyze disk usage. You should try it to see if you've missed anything. Otherwise, if the space is there but just not showing up, maybe try a restart.

I really like Disk Inventory X.

Much nicer, graphical interface, IMO.

like i said before i am 100% positive i didnt miss anything. there really isnt anything to miss. everything is in my movies folder. i know i didnd miss around 14 gb. the only thing i can think of is that i just ripped a dvd and then converted the video ts folder into a new dvd using toast titanium 8. the disc i ripped was about 6 gb and then new one would be around 4 gb. after this i moved the video ts folder to the trash and emptied it. after this was when i noticed the drop. ive tried numerous restarts and reset the pram and ran onyx and maintenence none of which worked. i am afraid my only real solution is to reformat which i dont want to do until leopard comes out.

just tried what size and i believe it did the trick. apperantly when i had tried to export some .avi's with quicktime pro and stopped the export process during a conversion it left some kind of hidden file on my actual desktop that i couldnt see on the actual desktop or in the finder. thank you so much. this is still a strange occurence that shouldnt happen and i will search and post if i can find any reasons for this.

I agree with analogika, Disk Inventory X is a nicer looking and more stable application.

I'll respectfully disagree. I think Disk Inventory X is ugly, and I've never had WhatSize crash. But to each his own.

LOL

I am more of a fan of WhatSize (free) and even more of a fan of OmniDiskSweeper (not free but looks like WhatSize....err) I know. Makes no sense.

I actually use both Disk Inventory and WhatSize/OmniDiskSweeper depending on whether I want to see pretty colors or just numbers and letters.
