I was at the NY Roosevelt Field Apple Store last night. I went to buy the new 17" Macbook Pro High Def Display and 160GB 7200 rpm. I got home and didn't open it and waited until I got home from work today to open it. As I was about to open it, I notice on the box there were 2 seals on it and as I look closer, the inner seal was already cut open. This mean someone has already bought this Macbook Pro and returned back to Apple. Some people may say it's no big deal, but it's a big deal to me because I paid a lot of money for this Macbook Pro and expect to get a brand new Macbook Pro. Apple shouldn't sell products as new without telling the people who are buying it. Any product that was returned and the seal is cut open mean the product is no longer new to me. Lucky for me, I notice the seal was cut open and I went and called the NYC SOHO Apple Store if I could exchange it at their store instead of going back to the NY Roosevelt Field Apple Store who I really don't trust anymore.

apple stores are certainly not allowed to sell open items as new... a mistake perhaps? i'd at least find out what (may have) happened...

either way, glad you are able to swap it out.

I find the Apple Stores are disorganized, which is why this might have happened. In Canada they charge a restocking fee on opened items, but they often waive it. Glad you could exchange it.

Which "seal" on the box are you referring to and how could you tell that it was cut? Are you talking about the circular clear sticker seals? Was it truly cut or was one side of the circle just not attached to the box?

There were 2 separate seals on the Macbook Pro box. Most people wouldn't have known unless they look closely and this is where I feel the Apple Store at NY Roosevelt Field was trying to be dishonest. The inside of the seal was cut, no doubt about it. Also, I feel instead of putting another clear seal over the original seal, Apple should of put a different seal on it, written on the seal should be returned item or something to let us customer know this is not a brand new sealed Macbook Pro. I don't care if there is nothing wrong with the Macbook Pro, if the seal is broken then the Macbook Pro to me is consider NOT BRAND NEW. I'm paying a lot of money and I work very hard for my money, I want what I paid for which is a Brand New sealed Macbook Pro 17".

Stop worrying. Your Mac is brand new. The 17" HiRes model is a custom model and I've seen custom models like this before, including my 17" HiRes model. My guess is Apple makes all of the 17" models the same and then customizes them before they send them out. It's still new. It's been customized at Apple and not been returned.

I also had this when I purchased 2 new Powerbooks back in the day. They were French models that were changed by apple and resold as US models. I guess they had prepared too many in french (probably for canada) and then changed them. You could see the stickers on the outside of the box weren't exactly covering the old stickers, so the sticker that had all of the specs on the outside of the box actually had everything written in french. They also forgot to take out the french modem cord in one of my powerbook boxes.

So don't worry. Go ask to see all of the 17" HiRes boxes at the store, they probably all have 2 seals. Mine does too.

Well, I went to the NYC SOHO Apple Store and the Sale rep went into the back and got me another one to exchange. The new one only got 1 seal on the box.

Ok well that's good then. I know mine was new. And like I said, I've seen Apple do this before to change things like the language of the machine before sending it out. The machine is still new and has not been a previous purchase that has been returned and resold. Apple is one place where I've never bought something that was sold as new but previously returned.... unlike a store like Fry's.

I've been lied at an Apple store whether something was "used" or "new". I had an instance where I had a DoA iPod. When I came to exchange it, they were out of stock of new iPod's. I left my broken iPod at the store and was told they would call me when they received an iPod shipment. Alas, when I went to the store they pulled an iPod from a brown box and presented it to me. I asked whether it was new or refurbished, and was assured it was new. When I got to my car I examined the iPod closely and found there were scratches all over the back cover. I called AppleCare and eventually they sent me a new one, inside a brand new SEALED box.

I seriously doubt an Apple store would sell returned items as new. And the OP's grammar is atrocious. I would be embarassed if I wrote like that.
