Hello All,

My 1ghz ti has started to show its age. For the past week or so, the screen will begin to flicker, then go black. When it goes black, you can see a faint image, and all movements. If this doesnt happen immediately at start up, it then happens after the machine gets warm, and the fans kick on.

Any ideas as to whats causing this?

Screens and inverters are easy enough to find on ebay.

Thanks.

By "faint image" do you mean the image is still there, but there's no backlight? It's possible you could have a loose connection to the display or that the TiBook's hinges have worn through the display cabling a little (a common-ish TiBook problem)?

Checking the cabling would require a rather thorough take-apart, but you can find a guide here.

If cabling's not to blame, then the logic board, invertor board or display itself could be at fault?

This is exactly what it does. If the backlight is going / gone, I'll have to replace the entire lcd, no?

No... the backlight sits in a circular bit of plastic running along the bottom edge of the lcd (between the hinges), if you disassemble the hinges and remove the lcd, you can pry it open very carefully and slide a new backlight in place.

However, it is more than likely that the cable running to the backlight has been severed/pinched within the hinge, this can be checked by removing the outer casing of the hinges, have a check of all connections and cabling before replacing the backlight.
