Why must I re-install osx and downgrade to 10.4.9 to get my off-the-shelf usb hard drive to work agian?

Why must I re-install osx and downgrade to 10.4.9 to stop hearing this stupid pops along with sounds from my brand-new MacBook?

I am sincerely disappointed, and wonder if the infernal iPhone has not hi-jacked the Apple mindset.

I feel your pain. Between .10 and a couple other Apple software updates, the QC has been lacking recently.

Sorry about ranting my frustrations, but I feel Apple has decided to become another cell-phone company... and the Mac users have become legacy technology users.

I still hope 10.4.11 will be the new messaih... I hope this is not, as they say, idle.

Can you give more details? You shouldn't have to downgrade for anything. What have you done to try to get the USB hard disk to work? Checked Disk Utility? And I thought the audio "pops" if that's what you're referring to were only in the MBP, not MB, and that was fixed.

1. Give us more details and we will help diagnose the problem. The audio problem was fixed in a software update, about your HD, we'll need more details.

2. No, Apple is not abandoning the Mac, stop crying doom.

3. There will be no 10.4.11.
Signature depreciated.

Apple responded to the audio pop problem, make sure you have done the most recent software update.
Apple - Support - Downloads - Audio Update 2007-001
And Apple made it clear in the download instructions (I know, I know...) that you had to disconnect USB peripherals other than the mouse and keyboard. What is the problem with the drive?

The audio pop issue was fixed within a few days with the audio update linked to by Sherman.

As for the USB drive: Try re-installing the 10.4.10 update using the COMBO updater from Apple's website.

It is *vitally* important that you DO NOT LAUNCH ANY APPLICATIONS while the "optimizing" process is running. There is a bug in OS X's prebinding that *will* cause random weirdness if you do.

Yes. It once again killed my usb hard drive. It now (again) lies un-used in my bottom shelf.

What USB brand are you using? What bridge chip-set?

Because it sounds more like you should look into updating the chip-set firmware!

Not all USB drives are created equal, some are weaker than others--and you have to wait for the manufacturer to update the firmware, which the cheaper ones may never, ever do.

You said 'once again', did the drive come back to life? How? When during this process? Did you have the USB drive connected during the upgrade?

We still want to know what brand it is... Was it connected during the 10.4.10 update?

The fact that it still works in Windows just reinforces the idea that it's firmware related. The manufacturer has tested and developed its firmware for Windows compatibility. They probably could care less about the Mac.

The specs on the drive cite compatibility with Mac OS 8.6 and above. Does that sound like they're worried about compatibility with OS X?

Checked out their website: no mention of firmware, no mention of bridge chipset.

If you were to transfer the HD into a reputable case, like something from OWC, it would work flawlessly. HDs are platform agnostic, firmware is platform specific.

It's not Apple's fault--it's the fact that the manufacturer is producing products for the Windows market.

OWC = Other World Computing

Here's a couple of 2.5" cases, firewire/usb2 (for IDE/ATA HD)

Search Results for "firewire case" at OtherWorldComputing.com

I have the Macally case, works great. Firewire bus power, but USB 2.0 if needed for sharing with Windows. on/off switch on my model, so I think they're using an old photo--but I would recommend the model with the switch, so that'd be something to ask them.

If you have SATA 2.5" HD, the cases are more expensive.
