I'm about to buy my MacBook for school, but I'm still having trouble deciding what exactly I should purchase...
I'll be using this computer for word documents, internet browsing, and a little bit of music - that's really it. I want it to last me through undergrad (longer would be nice, too!), but I'm pretty clueless as to what features I need to buy to make that happen.
Right now I'm looking at 1 GB memory and 120 GB hard drive; will this be enough for me? I don't want to have to buy anything extra for this computer after I purchase it online; I'd rather just get it now. Do I need 2 GB RAM/160 GB? Thanks for your input!

Yea, 1/120 will be fine for you. If your demands increase in the future you can always upgrade both (for prices well lower than what Apple wants).

If you don't mind paying extra now and really don't want to buy upgrades later (like you wrote), then I'd go with 2 GB RAM and a larger HD. You'll accumulate a lot of media, both academic and social, during 4 undergrad years, and may grow into new interests like video or photo editing. More RAM and a higher-capacity drive will help you.

You will be fine with the current specs. Update to 2GB won't really be needed unless you start doing photo and cinema stuff. I have a 1st gen macbook with a gig and it is enough i would say.

I say go 2/120, but don't buy the ram from Apple..

1 GB will probbaly suit you just fine, but the 2 is nice for multitasking, and it genreally keeps the system running a little smoother.

It's beyond simple/easy to upgrade the RAM and HDD on the MacBook, so just stick the with the 1/120. If you need/want to, just buy the upgrade, pluck out the battery, remove a panel behind the hard drive and you can access the RAM and HDD.

Memory and hard drive prices tend to drop over time, so it may pay to wait. Also, you'll want to factor in the cost of the extended warranty ($183 with education discount), though you have a year from the date of purchase in which to get it.
