My MacBook pro has started making these weird sounds. Either a loud (not high pitch) sound or a big 'klonk'. It comes from the left side of the computer. Does anyone have this problem or knows anything about it?

Are they 'metalic' sounds? Metalic 'klonk?' If so, then that's not healthy so back up your stuff to an external HD - your internal hard drive could be about to die ..

Your hard drive is on the left side (see link below for pic of location). I'd run some diagnostics from the laptop's hardware test disc and disk utility. I'd also backup now in the event your drive fails.

Could you perhaps record the sounds and link it somewhere for us to hear? I'd even host it for you for free if you don't have anywhere to serve it from :-)

If its on the left, there is nothing else in there which can 'klonk'. Its the HD. Backup now, when these newer drives go, they go properly.

And if you're still within the first year, buy Applecare immediately, if you haven't already got it...
