Hi folks.

So I've got an iBook G4 12" from 2004, I believe, and it's served me faithfully and well with not a single problem ever. Well, a couple of weeks ago the 4200 30gig hard drive started failing. Fortunately, I was able to backup all my data before it failed catastrophically. I got a replacement 5400 120gig Western Digital hard drive from New Egg and excised the old drive and implanted the new one. That was a bit of work, but I went slow and methodical, and didn't have a single screw or weird metal piece of metal left over when I was done! My old iBook works better than ever now, with 4 times the storage capacity and less heat being generated, if you can believe it. All hardware tests indicate that everything is working fine. Solid as a rock.

But my question is this: every ten seconds or so, there's a weird little sound. It sounds like someone flicking a tooth on a comb, or, silly as it sounds, a drop of water. It sounds like it's coming from the left side of the iBook. It's regular and constant. Could this be some kind of electrical arcing going on, or a read head or something? Thermal expansion perhaps? Anybody have any ideas? I'd hate to take this sucker apart again. Your input is most appreciated!

Joe

A desktop-sized Seagate drive that I bought two years ago would make a funny sound every now and then. I was a bit worried, so I researched it, and it turns out that the sound is either the heads parking when there are no read/write requests to perform, or the drive running a constant self-check.

So in other words, it's normal. :-P
