I no longer can use the top row of keys to adjust audio, backlight, etc., and I don't know why. I do have it set so I press the fn button to activate the Fkeys, which work, but when I don't have the fn key depressed, nothing happens when I hit any key. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something or not understanding, but if the hardware functions are set to work while the fn key is pressed (Keyboard tab of Keyboard & Mouse preferences), then of course they wouldn't do anything when it is not pressed. It's either with the fn key or without, not both.

I guess it is a misunderstanding.

1. I have the keyboard set to operate the F1-F12 keys only while pressing the fn button
2. While I am not holding the fn button, the hardware functions/F1-F12 keys do absolutely nothing
3. Before yesterday (and a few restarts) pressing the F1 key would turn down display brightness, etc.
4. If I click the toggle in the keyboard prefpane, I still cannot access the hardware functions, and now the fn key does not need to be pressed to enable the F1-F12 keypress.

Thoughts?

Go to control panel
click on Keyboard and Mouse
click on keyboard
uncheck the middle box "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software...."

that should do it

Yeah, I think that's what we were discussing earlier. That didn't help. It seems that after the last security update they just started working again. Thanks for the thoughts!
