I'm moving into a new place on Sept. 1. I'm sharing a house with four strangers, and they gave me the front room facing the street. All of my possessions will still be covered by my parent's homeowner's insurance, with the exception of my MacBook. Has anyone here purchased separate insurance just for their laptop? I have a feeling it's not really worth the cost, but I'd like to hear people's opinions.

Also, my security solution so far is basically a cheapo computer desk and a Kensington lock, which I know is pretty useless against a determined burglar. So I'm wondering if anyone has any better ideas in that department.

Thanks.

Since you're sharing, you may be paying a bit of rent to them or pitching in. You may want to look at renter's insurance -- specifically any policies that reimburse for full replacement, not focusing on depreciation.

Well since you have a laptop, the best way to secure it is with a good hiding place. If it goes from there, you know its someone who has had time to look around for it. Burglars are always in a hurry, and most are probably junkies these days so they will take the easiest stuff they can get that will buy a fix. They won't look too hard either.

If you can't find a good hiding place, make one. A drawer, wardrobe or cupboard with a false bottom or something like that.
