my macbook now flashes a globe before the apple, when its coming on or going off

I don't know what more information is needed. It just flashes a globe before the apple? Only iWork was recently installed. Skype was also removed from startup items.

The "globe" display says basically "the Mac is looking for a boot source on the network." Read all about it here. You fix this by going into the Startup Disk control panel in System Preferences and select "Mac OS X".
