I just bought a mini-toslink to toslink cord. A lot like the one shown on this page (Belkin PureAV Digital Optical Audio Cable with Mini-Toslink Adapter). With this I connect my MBP (the new santa rosa one) to my A/V reciever. The problem is that with the optical cord plugged in my MBP shuts down all audio. If I go to the system prefs for sound it says digital out but under it, it reads "the selected device has no output controls". Also the system is on mute and it won't let me adjust volume. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Right, OS X doesn't allow you to adjust the volume with an digital/optical output. But it should let you unmute it!

Before connecting the cable, make sure there is no muting set anywhere. You may have already thought of this, but I wanted to make it clear to anyone reading this that this is a potential problem.

I've always thought of the optical audio concept as a high bandwidth "line out" sort of thing, so not having any controls for it makes sense to me. But muting? Yeah, there's something going on if you can't get it to work at all.

ok, maybe I was wrong in saying that it was muted. When the volume bezel comes up it has a no symbol (like no smoking) and looks like it's telling me that there is no volume to change instead of mute. The real problem however is that I think it is not sending the optical data. I notice that the red light is never on. I heard of problems where the red light is always on and people cannot use headphones and I believe that I have the opposite problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

ps.
thanks for all the help thus far

I think I may have found the problem. I have noticed if I pull the mini toslink plug out of my mbp very fast, the red light is there so digital out is working I think. The problem is that the red light does not reach the other end. This would mean that I have a faulty cord not MBP, right?
