My brother's MacBook is having a serious issue. The last two times he ran software update, he has lost the ability to connect to his wireless network. He has a DLink router (DL-624). I just bought him a Netgear router today (WGR 614). His machine is not able to see either network. Oddly, he can see my router when he comes to my place (Also a Netgear). SSID is enabled on both routers, and my PowerBook G4 has no problems seeing his routers and connecting.

Even more odd is the fact that he can see the neighbord Wireless routers (which are PW protected).

Has anyone else had this experience? Is there a way to solve it other than reinstalling the OS and never using Software Update? This is really frustrating.

For the Record, he has a MacBook Core Duo 2GHz (The first intel model, not core2duo) with OS 10.4.10

Thank you for any assistance you can give me in getting this machine to connect to a Netgear or Dlink Router.

I'm having some problems myself with the built in Airport Wireless card, my Toshiba has no problems connecting to my wireless home network. Yet the Macbook that I have is able to connect but the internet connection drops out frequently, and sometimes even freezes when my Toshiba can connect just fine without any dropouts.

I think that the problem is in the 10.4.10 update that Apple released, because when I did a clean install of Mac OSX 10.4.8 I had no problems with any dropped signals or signal loss.

Try deleting and re-adding your prefferred networks in system prefs.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did the delete preferred networks thing. However, I did not delete any preference files...is there something I could try to delete in the preferences folder?

Thank you,

this threads needs more attention, but I dont know why it seems to have died. There is another thead which discuss the wireless networking problem. But its quite old so no reference to OS X 01.4.10 update.

Even I am also facing dropouts in my airport. They come annoy and go. I also did the preference thing but no effect.

There are complaints about MacBook Pros doing the same thing-mostly as an apparent result of the 10.4.10 update. This isn't a MacBook issue, nor is it an MBP issue. And it isn't a 10.4.10 issue either, or EVERYONE would be having problems, and that's certainly not the case. I believe that it's due to the included update for NEW, A/B/G/N wireless cards, at least when discussing the MBP.

Considering that I have one of the last Core Duo (NOT Core 2 Duo) MacBook Pros and not a hint of trouble, I'm curious about whether people with slightly older MacBooks are having a similar problem with their wireless connection. Can those of you who have posted in this thread provide the configuration (processor and RAM) and approximate age of your MacBooks? That might help identify some specific point where the trouble started to occur.

The machine I was working with was an original MacBook (first rev, bough shortly after they were released, white, 1.5GB, I am not certain what the processor was on those machines).

It has an Airport Extreme (non N variety) card.

I did resolve the problem. Here is what I did:

1. Reinstalled 10.4.6 from the CD's that came with the computer.
(everything worked fine)

2. Updated to 10.4.10 and installed all updates EXCEPT the Airport Update.

3. Deleted all preferred networks.

4. Reset the router and upgraded firmware. At this point I could see the router (this was an improvement b/c before the router could not even be seen). However, while I could see the router and connect to the router, I could not get an IP and I could not get on the net (other computers had no problem.

5. After some research, I tried changing the WEP key (yes, I know WEP is not great, but my cousin, who owns the router, has a computer that does not support WPA) to shared from open. That solved all problems.

I hope this thread helps people having problems.

Peace,
