Had an ibook g3 drive die on me. Contacted Tekserve and they quoted me a drive replacement (40gig for $235)
Is that took much. Should I just tough it out and replace the drive myself?

Replacing an iBook HD is really convoluted and intense--it can be done if you're really meticulous and handy with small screws, etc. Check out the guides at ifixit.com

Meantime, get a quote from CompUSA. Seems to me they're a lot cheaper--because the above price seems really excessive for only 40 GB.

FWIW, I used Tekserve several times when I was living in NYC and found them to be good, albeit not inexpensive. If you search the forums here for CompUSA, you will find that many have been quite dissatisfied with their Mac service. Given the age of your iBook, I dont think I would spend $235 on it. If you dont feel comfortable doing the rather difficult HD replacement yourself, I would suggest selling your iBook for parts on eBay, and using the procedes and the money not spent on the HD replacement to purchase something newer and more reliable. If you can swing it, purchasing a refurb MacBook would give you a lot of bang for your buck. Good luck.

I would contact MCE (powerbook1.com) and see if they'll do it cheaper. They do good work. You don't want to do it yourself if you're not into that kind of thing -- it's tricky.

Also check with pbfixit.com to see if they have any links to folks who do it all the time. They also have directions on there for do-it-yourself-ers.

I've replaced the HD in both a clamshell and an iBook G4...both were lengthy processes, but not worth $235 IMO. As long as you have a clean workspace, it is really not that difficult. The guides on pbfixit are excellent. It really helps if you have another computer handy to keep the guide open during the process
