no sound on MBP - help!

I can't hear audio on my Macbook Pro unless I connect earphones to the jack. When I remove the earphones from the jack, a red light shines in the little hole. Weird. This has never happened before. I've tried rebooting. Anyone know how I can fix this?

the problem has been resolved! i just had to unplug and plug my headphones into the jack several times until the red light disappeared.
