I just purchased my first Mac, a Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz. I'm really excited about it. I can't wait to get home and set it up this evening. Since this is my first experience with macs, does anyone have any tips to get me started? I've done a bit of reading on line about OS X and its features, but any nuggets of advice from seasoned Mac users are always appreciated.

Go through all the system preferences to get yourself acquainted with all the settings. Once you know that the rest is easy as pie. Another tip would be keyboard shortcuts which make using a Mac so sweet and better than Windows.

Command + C = Copy
Command + V = Paste
Command + X = Cut
Command + A = Select All
Command + E (when Finder is selected) = Eject Disk/Volume
Command + Backspace = Trash file/folder
Command + Backspace + Shift = Empty trash
Command + Shift + 3 = Take screenshot
Command + Shift + 4 = Draw area to take snapshot of
Command + Space = Spotlight search
Command + N = New window in any app
Command + W = Close window
Command + M = Minimize window
Command + O = Open
Command + S = Save
Command + T = New tab in Safari
Command + Shift + A = Applications (when Finder is selected)
Command + Shift + U = Utilities (when Finder is selected)
Command + Option + 8 = Toggle magnification (Use Command plus scroll to zoom in and out)
Command + Option + Ctrl + 8 = Toggle reverse colors

Look through the menus to learn even more shortcuts!

If you are going to use Safari as your web browser, download the freebie Safari Enhancer and turn on the Debug Menu. This allows you to import your bookmarks/favorites from IE. Also goto Users/you/Library/Safari/Icons and LOCK the folder and/or make it Read Only via the Get Info menu.
Finally (or first) go to Applications/Utilities/Disc and then do the following at least twice:

Repair Permissions
Under the Apple, run Software Update
REPEAT the sequence

Talk to your insurance agent about getting it covered. I have a Personal Articles Policy that covers my 2.4ghz MBP for $2800 in the event it is stolen, lost or accidentally damage. It runs me $30 a year with no deductible. Depending on your state, they may call it something else.

Thanks for the tips. The computer sure is nice, but the thing I'm noticing right away is that it is very hot. Is that normal? I'm not doing anything special. Just surfing the web and transfering some files.

It runs warm because there is a lot of power packed into a slim design. One thing you can do is install SMC Fan Control and adjust the RPMs of the fans. I have mine on default when using the battery and 4000 RPM while plugged in. Regardless, the chipset can withstand a decent tempature and will shut itself off long before getting damaged.

It runs hot -AHEM- quite warm because of badly applied thermal paste. You can try reapplying it (use Arctic Silver 5) yourself.

Wasn't that problem from a year or so ago?

I have a 2.4ghz and do not have an overly "hot" machine. It's warm, especially under load, but not to the point where I can't have it on my lap.
