It was supposed to arrive today, but the UPS tracker says a train derailment due to inclement weather has delayed my shipment. No estimated time of delivery.

I'm wondering if my new MBP 2.4GHz with an upgraded 200GB hard drive might have been damaged at all. And whether it's something I'll be able to tell within the warranty period.

Also, my window for cashing in rebates is shrinking with each day.

Yes, it may have been damaged. Or it may not. You may be able to tell within the warranty period. Or you may not.

What sort of response are you looking for? "Yes the LCD will be toast and you'll notice it immediately"? "The hard drive may be a time bomb, but you won't know until it's too late"? There's no way for anyone to make a prediction like that.

He's in pain. And I feel his pain.

Screw the PB, I hope no lives were lost, and nothing hazardous spilled. Derailments can get really messy.

While I understand your concern that your expensive and wondrous machine may not be delivered anytime soon, don't you think that Apple has such shipments insured? They have not delivered your purchase until it's in your hand, so even if it's been crushed to dust, it is NOT YOUR PROBLEM. Not having your new computer is obviously simply an inconvenience, not a major problem, or you wouldn't be able to post here.

I'm not saying don't be disappointed, but do be cognizant that there are far more important issues at hand. As shabbasuraj points out, a train derailment can be cataclysmic for the people around it. A derailment here in San Antonio about 18 months ago killed about half a dozen people because at least one car containing chlorine derailed and broke open... Chlorine is incredibly toxic, and it displaces air. Chlorine injuries are horrible...

So, "sorry your computer won't be delivered when you expected," but also "have a heart for those impacted by this derailment."
