I'll be receiving my MBP shortly, and I've never had an express card slot before. I'm thinking of getting an SD or CompactFlash card reader (if they exist) for my camera. What do other people use this slot for?

Any recommended cards to purchase?

eSATA, WWAN, and flash media readers... everything the MBP is missing.

A fairly large list of options.

Except many of those are 54mm (so they won't fit) or don't have OS X drivers.
Here are some Mac-compatible ExpressCards.

Sure, but I'm not sure why you'd want it. As a Time Machine backup?

eSATA - just to put the external HD connection on the left side on my MBP so it won't conflict with using a mouse.

Since I'm already paying for a data plan for my iPhone, I'm not getting another WWAN card for my MacBook Pro.

Are there any HD TV tuner cards?

Do the cards stick out the side of the computer, or fit flush? I don't want it unless it fits flush otherwise it won't fit in my bag.

Yes, if you're in some parts of Europe.

Of course they stick out.
