Anything that supports VGA or DVI should work. Just make sure you have the right adapter for your MacBook -- the one Apple sells.

For the Olevia 27" should I use a DVI to VGA adapter or a DVI to HDMI adapter? For either display would I have to connect the MacBook Pro and the monitor to a cable that enables audio on the display?

Use a dvi to hdmi adapter or cable. Do not use vga. sam
I have not connected an audio cable to my MBP as yet.

OfficeDepot had AcerĀ® AL2216Wbd 22" Widescreen Digital/Analog LCD Monitor, Black on sale last week for $179 without rebates. Local store sold me 6 and only charged me for 5....
They were no longer going to carry that model! I bought all they had!

Gaming from your computer or from a console? If its from the computer, I'd go with one of the monitors.
