Ok, now that I'm back on my MBP, I've had a chance to check out my drive. It's an HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080M with firmware version AA26. Software Update says I'm up to date with everything. Am I missing something, or have I simply not read all the right posts? Or do I have to jump through a different hoop to patch my drive?

That's a CD MBP right? IIRC there's no RPC-1 firmware available for that drive (yet).

You got one of the iMacs with the LG/Hitachi(?) drives.
Apple uses about 90% Matsushita (Panasonic) drives and 10% others, in their computers that use slot loading laptop drives.
In their towers, they used ~90% Pioneer and ~10% others drives. I know because my Power Mac G5 has a Sony drive in it... which made it very hard to change to a newer Pioneer drive, because the mounting screws are different and you can't seem to get just the mounting screws from ANYWHERE!

I was rather surprised to see "HL-DT-ST" show up myself. It's worked fine for me-even burning video DVDs for a class. But the whole region issue is a burr under my saddle as they say-I don't currently have DVDs from outside Region 1 (though I do have a few Region 0 discs), but what if I did...

Simon help! I went to the french site before seeing this forum... I have the same BE39... have downloaded the firmware... but don't know how to run the darn thing... the file is .exe... so how do I run the frimware?
The french wedsite said since i have the Superdrive 2.1 update... that I would have to use parallels... which I have downloaded and have running. But I still do not understand how to to run the thing
thanksI have been going at this for hours, Thomas

The Matsishita DVD-R UJ-846 [FM3J] firmware update was rejected by my MacMini.
"...not compatible with 10.5.4", "...upgrade OS and and try again",
Readme stated it is suitability for Max OS X 10.4.5 or later...
The firmware was sourced via http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=43082.
Refer UJ-846, Firmware version FM3J.
Any suggestions, I am extremely annoyed by this Regional Code nonsense. I have lived in Sydney, Singapore, Japan, and Perth, and as a consequence, have DVD's in my library with various regional codes, all which work without issue on all the DVD players I have owned over the years. But not on my Apple MacMini? [except the selected code].
Your ideas most welcome; I would very much like to get this sorted out...
Thank you, all, for a very comprehensive discussion, and great set of links.
Robert
