I am trying to uprade by buddies Mac Book to 3gb of ram but I am having trouble finding the right stuff. It appears as though Apple only offers them in 2gb now and all of the RAM suppliers like RamJet have stopped listing the 2gb module.

Any idea where the good deals are?

link me.

MacBooks can only handle 2 GB of RAM.

Core 2 MacBooks can handle 3GB. Look for good deals on NewEgg. You want PC2-5300 DDR2-667 SO-DIMM RAM. Expect 2GB modules to be around $90 - $120.

The second reply is wrong. I have 3GB of RAM in my MacBook and it is recognised as 3GB. However, the only place you can currently purchase 3GB that is guaranteed to work in the MacBook that I know of at the moment is OWC:

3.0GB (1GB+2GB Kit) PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz... (53IM2DDR3GBK) at OWC

That is where I purchased mine, and although the delivery wasn't amazingly quick from the US the UK (understandably), they're a great company to deal with.

I'm in North America so getting the shipment shouldn't be a problem. I pointed out the CS3 test on the other forum to my buddy and he decided that he couldn't do without 3GB. I have two but will probably also make the jump. The performance impact of the RAM is just too good.

What kind of experience did you guys have with the 2 GB upgrade?

Everything got a heck of a lot faster, as you would expect, but its hard for me to attribute the performance changes accurately as I also replaced my nearly full original HD with a 250GB Scorpio at the same time.

I was considering a HD upgrade as my MacBook(120GB) is just a month old and is already over half full. Although, I have a 160Gb external that should help but I can't help feeling as though it defeats the mobility of my MB. So at somepoint in the future I will probably make the jump to atleast 160/200GB.

How is hard is the HD instalation? Did you do it yourself? Does that change your AppleCare Plan? Where did you get the HD? How much cache memory did you get and what RPM?

I got the WD Scorpio drive, it's 5,200rpm, 8MB buffer. I got the Scorpio because it's been raved about by MacBook owners and I can see why. It's really quiet, battery life seems to have extended a little, and who can argue with 250GB of storage in a laptop. I bought it from a UK store, you'd be better off Googling it for some decent US prices. Capacity was more important to me than speed and I wasn't able to find a 7,200rpm 250GB drive at the time of purchase.

WD Scorpio 250 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD2500BEVS )

As for the installation, it's perfectly legal within the AppleCare and it's even documented by Apple. It's as easy as replacing the RAM in the new MacBook. Pop out the battery, undo 3 or 4 screws on the metal plate, pull the old drive out, slide the new drive in. It was that simple, can't have taken more than a few minutes. To make things even easier I put the old drive in a USB enclosure, booted off of that and replicated my old HD onto my new one. Whole process probably took about 30 minutes max. Time would be reduced even further if you're already opening it up to replace the RAM.

Best upgrade I've done by far.
