Audio Problem From Using Headphones PLEASE HELP

this has happened to my brothers mac and he had to send it in for 2 weeks to fix it. what happened is after using headphones on my macbook i take it out and the speakers wont play the audio and a read light shines out of the headphone jack. also when i try to turn my volume up the audio screen has a little cirlcle with a cross out symbol below the volume bar please tell me if u know a way to fix it without sending it in thanks

Your system got confused and thinks it's sending audio to the optical digital out (where the volume control doesn't work).

Try sticking in and removing the headphone plug a couple of times.

If that doesn't help, and fiddling with SystemPreferences --> Sound doesn't fix it, open /Applications/Audio-MIDI Setup and change the output back to analog.
