My machine (2.2 GHz MBP) started making some awful noises last night. It was a strange high-volume staticy noise, with no obvious association to any running software, or anything else. It did this again after a full power-off/battery-removed reboot.

Unfortunately, when I took it to the Apple Store, it refused to make the sounds or exhibit any of the bad behavior and the Genius was unable to give me any suggestions as to what might be wrong.

I'm wondering if the fine folks of the MacNN forums might have any ideas about what might have caused it, and what I might do to fix it (aside from quickly purchasing AppleCare, before my 90 day warranty runs out).

Maybe it was coming from your speakers as a result of nearby electrical/audio feedback.

What kinds of equipment and devices were near your Mac when this happened?

The spontaneous reboots only happened twice, both times right after the loud crackling static.

The static happened in two environments, one in my office near some standard computer equipment (a few flat panels, a mac pro, nothing major), and on my armchair in my den, near only a lamp. Nothing obvious.

I'm aware of the 1 year warranty. This is actually my second MBP, and I'm hoping to avoid getting a third as the interruption is extremely annoying. I was hoping that somebody would have an answer like "oh, that is caused by a known software problem... here's how to work around it."

Thanks anyway, I guess. I'll just wait and see if it does it again.
