Hi, I have a big problem with my iBook G4, a couple of days ago we got hit by lightning, it fried 2 TV's, 3 cable boxes, the complete phone system, 4 out of five phones ,the printer and our well water pump, in short one hell of a power surge!
The Verizon Fios technician was here for 5 hours yesterday, he replaced the complete fiber optic interface, everything from the the fiber optic cable onwards including the router. Problem I have is that I can't get back on line, my mac won't communicate with the router, I tried everything that I could think of.
It so happens that I have here a friend's Power book , it was unplugged at the time of the strike so it was unaffected, I plugged it in and it went on line with no problem. I tried inputting all the info from that machine in to my machine manually but it won't accept it. My G4 seems to work fine except for that, so I ran the hardware tests, it passed them all, I put in the hardware restore CD, twice, I follow the instructions to the letter, but as it after a little while it tells me that a type 2 error occurred while copying, I am reluctant to go through the Apple help line, they want $49.95 to even talk to me and I can ill afford that at the moment, can anyone here help, please?

If your iBook was plugged into the router at the time, it's likely that your Ethernet port has been damaged/destroyed.

Yep, I'd say it's your built in ethernet port that's the problem. A way to test this would be to connect a good ethernet cable between your G4 and the PowerBook your friend brought over-if they can see each other, the iBook's ethernet port is ok, otherwise, it's history.

FWIW, the "hardware test" doesn't test anything outside the case-or how well the ethernet port is working. It could be as simple as a toasted solder joint at the connector, but it's still "outside" the case.

Just recently I had a lightning strike and blew out my power adapter for my Macbook. That was easily replaced though, with Applecare. Good luck with yours!
