I tried several different approaches to tether my 8525 to my MACBOOK, with no success.

I have specific scripts from the web installed into the modem scripts folder. No luck with any of them. I believe the scripts aren't the problem but the COM ports are the culprit.

I recieve an error message that says," Failed to open RFCOMM serial channel. Check if authentication needs to be enabled in your device"

This is after pairing the 8525 to the MACBOOK and completing the blue tooth setting in the Network folder in the System Preference folder.

The pairing is successful because I can "send files" to the 8525 via blue tooth icon.

I read somewhere that the MACBOOK should allow me to set and choose COM ports but I haven't found the option.

My question is where do I find the COM port option in the MACBOOK because I believe that is where my problem is.

MACBOOK C2D, OS 10.4.10.

I don't use the 8525 but I have been tethering phones to Apple laptops for a couple years now and due to an unbelievable lack of Mac support directly from cellular providers, I have had to become my own expert. Can you tell me what you are using for the rest of your settings, ie: username, password, telephone number (of course, I know it's not an actual telephone number). Also, have you looked in your Console log to see the exact error you're getting?

OK, excellent. Clearly, you've done your homework as well. All your settings look good. I only have one suggestion that it looks like you haven't tried just yet. Everything below is case sensitive:
Telephone number: wap.cingular (also try leaving this blank completely)
Username: guest
password: guest

Yes, I realize I'm not using any of the *99# and so on, options. This config works great for me. Additionally, head on over here: Ross Barkman's Home Page
and have a look at the free 3G modem scripts available. Also, with a little "Googling", you may find an "HSDPA/UMTS" specific script that works best. It took me a while to find the right script that works best with my phone. I found a few that work sometimes but only one or two that work consistently.

As far as the Console goes. It's an application in your "Utilities" folder. Before changing any settings at all. Go ahead and launch it, then try to make a connection while watching the Console off to the side. You may be able to spot the error exactly where it's happening. It was useful for me.

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Thabks,
I also found the site you mentioned above.
The scripts I have tried thus far are:
Generic 3G CID1
Generic 3G CID2
Generic 3G CID3
Generic 3G CID5
Generic GPRS CID1
Generic GPRS CID2
Generic GPRS CID3
HTC TyTN
Windows GSM
Windows GSM 1.8M
Windows GSM 3.6M
Windows GSM 460k
Windows GSM 920k
Windows GSM Slow

The I found the Console Log also. I will monitor that window when I try to connect with the settings you suggested.

Don't bother with all these approaches. FAR easier:

1) Make sure you are using AKU3 of Windows Mobile 5. Use the very latest ROM from AT&T.
2) Use the Bluetooth PAN feature on the device (Internet Connect I *think*)
3) Make sure you are using 10.4.10 since that added BT PAN support:

(Failed to open /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem: Resource busy)
That is the message in the Console Log after trying to connect via bluetooth.

The ROM on my phone is the most current, however the "bluetooth pan" option isn't available in System Preference/ Network. I am using the blurtooth option instead.

I will Google that message for more info.
