Just joined the ranks after years cursing BG. MBP 2.4 15" Lovely piece of kit.
However its is driving me nuts geting it to work OK This may sound screwy but I cannot drag and drop multiple files, it wont work.
Trying to get my mails from OE over to Entourage. Got a file full of mails 3000 in a folder on desktop. Trying to drag them into message folder. Select one file and it works fine. Select multiple and as soon as you try to drag, the selection goes and only the one under the pointer highlighted. Tried copy paste but Paste option only there in Finder mode, greyed out in entourage.
Feel like a total newbie

have you tried highlighting the first file, then holding down the shift key and then highlighting the last item?

That doesn't work in the Finder. I think you are just clicking one too many times.

Of course it does - in list and column views.

Sounds like you are still holding down the Shift key when you go to move the items. Try this: make your selection of files, let go of the keyboard, click on any one highlighted item, and drag 'em all.
The Copy/Paste issue is totally different on the Mac. It does not copy a file, it copies the name of the file. Welcome to the right side!

Hi guys
Thanks for input. Definitely used shift to select. Have tried all ways to select the group of files but always kills the selection when I click on one. I have been doing this for years on XP etc. Interestingly it will occasionally work if two or three files are selected, and once I got about ten but I cant repeat that all the time. Seems like two probs.

1 Selecting a group so I can drag it
2 Getting it to stick on the recipient folder. Mac does not seem to like dragging files from one app (Finder) to another (Entourage) unless its a single file. Ditto with the copy paste function

Guess I will have to get someone to look at this machine

The trick is that you have to click on the text of the filename of one of the items. If you click the whitespace, even though it his highlighted, it will deselect all the other items.

Patman You are an absolute star. That was all it was and explains why it was so hit and miss. I was on the title bar but not the text all the time. Still of interest that copy and paste does not go across apps but that is not an issue
Thanks

Copy and paste does work across apps, so long as the file your copying isn't so large as to not fit in the clipboard (like large Photoshop files, for instance).

It certainly works for text and not over-large images, though.

In Finder I select a file an 8k .eml file. In Edit I copy.

Goto Entourage and the paste option is greyed out. Its the only cross app I have tried. Is this an MS problem?

If you're using Microsoft software in an Apple OS, I wouldn't be too quick to suspect Mac for the problems you are having.

If you click a file in the Finder and hit "Copy", you're copying the file name. There is no "copy and paste" for files in the Finder like there is on Windows - please search the OS X forum for *plenty* of discussion on why; this is not the place for that.

That filename, obviously, is not pasteable into Entourage.

Just drag and drop it into the Entourage window.

Fundamental principle of Mac usage #1:

If you want to put something somewhere, make it ready where it is, and then drag it to where you want it to go. Doesn't matter what it is - text, image, a file path, video, audio - anything.

WTF guys, why have more than one of you said there's no such thing as file Copy and Paste in the Finder? There most certainly is. The issue is that there is no Windows style file Cut and Paste. Or are you narrowly referring to an inability to copy a file in the Finder and then paste it into a different application? If that feature exists in Windows, that's totally new information to me.

Oh, btw, when you're selecting multiple files in the Finder, it's a better idea to hold down the Command key rather than the Shift key unless you mean to select contiguous blocks of files.

Of course there is. Where have you been all this time?

His problem is he can't copy files from Finder to Entourage. That's because Entourage doesn't support pasting files from the Finder due to Microsoft's lack of foresight.

Hi G&G Good feedback and you are right. The Windows op is different re c&p. I have not used (or been able) to do that cross app c&p in Windows previously (except Office) so not fretting it

If you do use Vista don't forget to download and install Switcher. It brings Exposé to Windows and looks more polished than Apple's.
