I was browsing facebook the other day and fell across a group for people who are in love with their Mac laptops. I noticed that one of the pictures had a black Macbook with a backlight keyboard. Has anybody seen such a thing like this? Is this a mod or can you pick up a tool like this at the Apple Store?

Must be a mod. The MacBook does not have a backlit keyboard and Apple won't sell you anything to make it so.

There are some companies who do these modifications - i didn´t find it on a fast google trip, but one company also paints macbook pro... that´s somehow cool!
It´s a nice idea - black with a backlit keyboard. Apple could use that idea! :-)

I did come across one site. Custom Paintjobs for Macbook. There was also another site too that did all types of hardware; PS3, Wii, iPhone, Mice, Keyboards etc. I will post the link later, I must fish through some sites.

Like I've said before, just use glow-in-the-dark paint.
Or, you could modify the MacBook keys so the letters are translucent (like on the MBP keys) and figure out how to either put LEDs under each key or string light-emitting fiber optic cables underneath the keyboard (which is what I think Apple does) and then find a way to implement either an ambient light sensor or an on/off switch.

Apple does indeed use fibre optics in their backlit keyboards. Or they did. The first ones were strands of fibre stretched across a white reflector under the keyboard. Later models had a clever design which had white dots placed below each key on a plastic sheet. White LEDs at one end shine light through the clear layer and the white dots do a good job of transmitting it up through the keys.
I would love to know a good way of making translucent keys for a MacBook. I do have one idea actually........
