i recently bought a Samsung LCD, and I already had the VGA adapter and cable for my Macbook. I used this and was playing Planet Earth with it and it looked good, but not quite what I expected. I was wondering if the PQ would get better if I bought the miniDVI/DVI and DVI/HDMI adapter to my TV. Any thoughts on this? or would I still get the same results? TIA

Yes, HDMI will look better than VGA. Many HDTVs won't even accept VGA at their full resolution, so you're getting ugly scaling on top of the analog signal.

I don't know if this applies to all HDTVs, but I have a 46" 1080p Sony, and computer output via HDMI looks like crap, and is only displayed at 1080i. Via VGA, it is displayed at full 1080p, and looks great. ymmv.

Strange. I've seen (1366x768 and 1920x1080) HDTVs that accept at most 1024x768, 1280x720, 1366x768, or 1920x1080, so there is a lot of variation out there.
Any 1080p set should accept 1080p over HDMI, since that's the only way to get it from non-computer devices. There's something wrong if yours isn't, perhaps just a setup issue.

Analog looking better than digital? Unless you're seeing bad compression artifacts (what content are you looking at?), I find that hard to believe.
