Can you tell me what this "opt" folder is for? And can you tell me if the folders are in the right places.

The opt folder is supposed to be there, but I think it's supposed to be hidden.
Nothing else looks awry, apart from the fact that you've got opt, system and users in your sidebar. You can drag them out.

You should only have four folders in the root of your hard drive: Applications, Library, System, Users. Anything else is unnecessary, IMO. The other folders and files you have there should be in your User folder, unless you want to share some of those with other users, in which case those items should be located in /Users/Shared. Btw, you can take a screen shot with the standard Mac OS screen shot shortcuts (command-shift-3 for whole screen, command-shift-4 for cross hair partial selections, command-shift-control-4 to copy to clip board; press the space key afterward to convert the cross hair to a camera for capturing particular windows. . .)

OT: Thanks for the shortcuts on the screen captures; I've been going through Grabber to get them.

many thanks for the tip on the screen shot

so aside from the 4 folders, I should drag the rest of the folders to the 'users" folders right?

Yup, those are the only things required to be there in a standard installation.

I have never heard of such a folder. What does it contain?

It's part of the BSD subsystem, along with /usr/, /etc/, and others.

No, it isn't.

/opt is the name of the folder used by some Unix/Linux distros to install additional applications, but it isn't a part of the system. If this user ever installed MacPorts on the system, it would have created the opt folder.

/opt should not be relocated, because if there are files in there that are needed the app will be looking for them there. If, and only if, there are files in there that are not being used, then the folder could just be trashed.

oh damn.

I figured it was just auto-created as part of the rest of the BSD part of OS X.

Understandable, the name of the folder is nothing Mac-like

Speaking of "all whacked" the title of this should read "Macbook folders *are* all whacked"

You have moved all the folders in your home folder to the top level of your hard drive.

Move them back, and restart the computer, and all will be as before.
