Based on historic refresh periods: In 2.5 months
Based on improved hardware availability: Any day now
But it won't be Santa Rosa (none of the Intel Macs are)... just Crestline-GM.

How much of a difference is there between the 1st gen macbook and the current ones? I mean aren't the increments in computer speeds these days slower than they used to be in the late 90s? Or perhaps the CPU is almost always bottlenecked by other components.

It's a noticeable difference. I have a friend who has both a 2.0 GHz CD and 2.16 GHz C2D. The Core 2 Duo is noticeably snappier at pretty much everything. Both have 2 Gb of RAM.
