My wife has been using my old iBook G4 800mhz for over a year now. In june of 2006 i replaced the hard drive after it crapped out. Now just over a year and three months the same problems are coming up - it started freezing and all that good stuff - after doing all the basic checks and disk checks - nothing. We get the good old ? folder and now disk utility won't even find the drive. I thought maybe the ibook was too hot because it would work for awhile in the morning and then crash - now it isn't doing anything.

Could there be something more going on with this ibook if it has killed two hard drives in about a year?

Your logic board is bad. But this is specific to the ata-bus off your hard drive. Or some chip related to the hard drive's ata bus. I'd bet you can boot without a hitch off an external fw drive, or your DVD OSX installation. This has been my case. I initially thought to be an hd problem, replacing 2 HDs in a row. I went with the closest logical step up. replacing the ata mini ribbon that connects to the internal drive. Same deal. I later tried the same drives I thought damaged with special adapters for my desktop mac. And guess what? They all work fine. and I was able to recover all files. Hell the drives weren't damaged at all!
Contrary to popular belief. The Logic board failure extends beyond the video chipset. It's failure of bad solder points that crack over time. And it could be ANY chip. That's why it works when you apply pressure down on the case. Basically you're joining the bad solder points by force.

Apple is cooking up numbers saying that only a minority of users are experiencing these problems. Instead of saying that only users who bought extended warranties are the ones complaining about this problem.

My wife took the HD in to have it checked at the local university. Everything checked out fine.

Is there a way to diagnose the logic board or does the whole thing need replacing?

yea....the exact same thing happened to my ibook back in March....after a week of misery....i finally just bought an external firewire drive and put the harddrive in that. When you boot up the first time, press option and select the name of your harddrive. I used that for months without any problems until the logicboard issue recently just got worse so now there is something else wrong with the logic board and it freezes after about 2-3 minutes of use. I'd recommend just getting an external drive and that will work for a good amount of time....enough time for you to save up for a macbook.
