Today, I found out that my built in speakers for my macbook pro arent working anymore.

I checked my sound settings and when I try to adjust my volume I see this:



However, when I plugin my headphones the sound works. I get an output audio device and I can adjust my volume again. I'm pretty sure the internal speakers arent broken because when I restart my mac, I hear the welcome music.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue under Leopard (Clean installation) since a few hours.
The sound worked perfectly fine for a day after installing Leopard and still works fine in Windows under Bootcamp.
Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior?

look inside your headphone jack...see if there's a red light glowing in there. Looks like the computer is set to optical out instead of using the built in speakers

Yeah, I found some more information about this issue here:

The red digital-out light was indeed glowing. Turns out there was a small piece of fluff in there — I removed it with a toothpick (as described in the thread linked above) and the issue disappeared.
