About a year ago my dad bought a "Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter", for his 12" PowerBook (1.0GHz), to be able to connect it to a TV using a composite cable, however we never managed to get it working correctly at the time, gave up and forgot about it.

Now i've decided to give it a try again, never quite understood why it never worked. The problem is: it doesn't recognize the adapter as a TV, it seems to think its some kind of generic monitor, so it wont show NTSC/PAL resolutions in the Displays prefpane. Also even tho the resolution is set to 640x480 @60Hz, the image on the TV looks completely jumbled.

prefpane looks like this on his computer:

I've tried connecting my 15" AlBook to the same TV/composite cable, using the s-video to composite adapter that shipped with my computer, and it works perfectly. I also noticed the TV is capable of displaying both NTSC and PAL resolutions.

this is what the prefpane looks like on my computer, connected to the same TV.

Does anyone have any idea, why this doesn't work on his 12" PB?

I've tried everything i could think of, "Detect Displays", Switching mirroring on/off, different resolutions etc, and it never seems to be able to detect that it's a TV, like it does on my computer.

There is a problem with the mini-DVI to TV adaptor. Like you said, it's not getting recognized as a TV. Try replacing it.
