Just got a Macbook a few days ago - the white model w/2 gigs of memory and a burner. The first day I had it, I installed a few standard apps - Firefox, Opera, Carbon emacs. I also instlled the 1.1 SMC Firmware Update, which completed without a problem.

That night I shut it off (I didn't put it to sleep - I know I shut it off). The next morning it wouldn't start - no video, no noises, no lights, nothing at all. I did all the steps in the manual to try & start it, with no go. Called Apple Care and they said I should exchange it.

That was two nights ago. Tonight I thought I would give it another try, so I opened the case, and it seemed to come awake - as if it had been asleep rather than shut down! I have since rebooted several times - it restarts fine; it sleeps fine. When I shut down and restart, however, it's odd - I get highly variable delays before it will actually boot. Usually it's 20 seconds or so after I press the power button, but once it was only 2 or 3 seconds.

Everything else seems fine, but I'm nervous about keeping this model past the 14 day return period. Anyone else ever have this experience w/variable delays before booting?

Obviously there's a hardware problem of some sort. Return it.

You could try restoring your firmware on the chance it's related to that.

You don't want your expensive machine to break on you after a little while, so i'd return it asap to get peace of mind, I definately would.

It's a shame your new machine has been playing up, because I've got the same spec'd macbook as you and I've had no problems with it and I only got mine a few weeks ago.
