good tools/programs for speed/maintenance for MB?

I was wondering if anyone knows some good apps to get from the ones listed on the apple website that are for increasing system speed, like disk defragmentation or any of those sort of programs, that will help keep my MB running quickly and smoothly. theres too many for me to choose, so I need help with which one(or ones) to get. thanks!! and free ones I might add!
