I have a new MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz 15". When looking at RAM, I see I have two slots, each slot holding 1 GB already. Question - can I upgrade one slot to 2 GB for a total of 3 GB, or must I upgrade this machine with equal RAM sticks (i.e. 2 GB in each)? There is a significant difference in price, so I'd like to take the cheapest way if possible.
I'm frustrated because Vista runs slow in Parallels.

You can upgrade just one SO-DIMM to 2 GB for a total of 3 GB. There might be a minor performance penalty due to the unmatched pairs, but since you have dedicated VRAM, you'll likely not notice it all.

Asymmetric configurations are fine.
Where are you buying memory? After dropping $2500+ on the laptop what's another $160-230 for 4GB RAM (less the ~$50 you could get selling your 2x1GB)?

how much memory are you giving to parallels? Vista is a hog and it probably needs a gig.

I would buy your 2x 1 GB.
As with the other posters, I see nothing bad about dropping the money for 4 GB, after buying a really expensive computer...

Yes, I caved in and purchased 4 GB of RAM. Adamfishercox - I'll send you a PM on the current 2 GB.

For better Vista performance, might want to give VMWare Fusion a try. It is known to be somewhat better in the memory management department.
