How would the performance be? Anybody tried this? Thanks.

It's going to be mediocre. A friend has the 500 MHz model and 512 MB RAM.

What amount of RAM do you have?

It's gonna be slow. I have seen it running on faster machines than that and it's still sluggish. If you max out the ram it may not be too bad, but it won't be fast.

Well, it isn't going to be a barn-burner, but you already knew that. I have several people still running Tiger on G3 chips. Ram is your friend, the more the better.

amazing:

Can you expand? How is 'fine'? Smooth? With 1 GB of RAM is what I am going to run. Is it very sluggish? How is video?

what I meant was that if you're now running Panther, performance will be comparable under Tiger, with the same RAM.

What system are you now running?

Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I just want to know if a 400mhz TiBook is slow like a snail in Tiger. Also, can we get 2 GB of RAM in it?

Well, you've got a single core CPU (so divide by two) at 400MHz vs. roughly 2Ghz (so divide again by five) -- side by side, it's going to be a painful comparison BUT Tiger does run OK on a G3 Pismo, and a 660Mhz G4 -- so it really depends upon what you expect from the system. Tiger doesn't seem (to me) to be any slower than prior OS X releases on any set hardware, if that helps.

Maximum RAM is 1 GB, afaik. That just means you do a restart when you go get a cuppa, and that you don't run as much simultaneously.

And dimmer is right, side-by-side with a C2D you're gonna be very impatient. But I still babysit my former Ti-400 and Tiger is OK on it. The screen is undoubtedly dimmer from years of use, but clarity and viewing angle are great. It'll handle a whole bunch of stuff quite competently. Just be careful of the hinges.

Tiger runs both slightly slower and somewhat hotter than Panther on the Tibook. Unless you really need some Tiger-only features, it isn't really worth it.

I didn't notice any difference between Tiger and Panther on the Ti-400, but certainly didn't measure it in any way. Just my perception. In any case, even if there were a slight speed difference, staying current in familiarity with the current system software would be worth it.

Heat, imo, comes from how poorly Safari handles Flash. Eliminate or block flash, and you get rid of a lot of maxed-out processors and the resultant heat. I keep Activity monitor open occasionally in the background, to where I can just see the CPU graph peaking out behind a Safari screen. When a page is heavy in flash, I can see processor use getting maxed out and the heat goes up, with the fans coming on in hairdryer mode shortly thereafter. Hence the need for flash blockers.

The other thing that ramps up processor use and heat is if you're leaving something open in Classic in the background. TruBlueEnvironment is fine when your classic app is being used in the foreground, or when you've quit the classic app, but leave a classic app open in the background and it ramps processor use up to the max. I confess to still running Shanghai II mahjong under classic. Haven't found any mahjong solitaire that I like as well. However, all I have to do is quit it and classic sleeps quite comfortably without problems.

Officially, yes. But it works also with two 1GB sticks or anything above the 1 GB stick.

Just curious: have you seen a PB 400 using higher amounts of RAM? The only reason I'm asking is that MacTracker is usually pretty good about specifying whether it is possible to use higher amounts of RAM than Apple specs--and it still gives the 1 GB limitation.

Totally great if you can use more RAM!

As an aside: I switched to using Firefox with FlashBlocker. It's astonishing how quiet browsing has become on my 12" PB. Much cooler, far fewer fan episodes.

Aufwiederhören!
