hello again, well i started school and during lectures in certain buildings, i don't get a wireless signal while some people in the lecture hall do. I can tell by the Facebook.com page on their screens. I asked a friend he said sometimes he gets it sometimes he doesn't. But i never do get it. not once. it is the school wireless and i get it in other buildings, it is on my preferred networks so it should connect when in range. I am just wondering how come my mbp won't pick up the wireless while others are connecting ?

anyone experienced that before ?

thanks

This is not a common occurrence, and I think that it's an indication that there's something wrong with your computer. Specifically, it sounds like the antenna connection to the AirPort card is not quite fully seated. I'd take the computer to the nearest Apple Store and ask the Genius Bar folks to have a look at it-giving them the full set of symptoms as you've posted here. I get signal levels with my MBP that are VERY similar to what my classmates who are using plastic-cased computers get; it's not something to do with the MBP's metallic case.

how much does it cost to get it checked by a genius ? i haven't used their service before.

and another question regarding airport. do you know of any common problems with linksys routers and macs ? i googled it and most people said they are not compatible. could that explain why it keeps disconnecting when i am at home ? do you recommend a better wireless router ?

thanks

Nothing, it's free. Repairs are free as long as your bought your computer less than a year ago.

The majority of complaints about people having problems using Linksys equipment with Macs come from wanting the ultra-hand-holding that Linksys' setup discs provide to Windows users. I find that sort of "support" condescending myself. If the hardware is actually working, it'll work with ANYTHING-and you can take that in both directions. I'll also point out that people who have positive experiences generally don't post to gloat "my new router is so much better than sliced bread and anything all of you might own!!!!" They post when they have problems. If you search here, you'll see tons of people asking for help and finding out their problems are solved with simple stuff like rebooting the router (which is a good technique for any router, including Apple's), rebooting their modem, or actually reading the flippin' manual in the first place. (Yeah, I posted a lot of the fixes, and yeah, I am still frustrated by people who will take up half a forum screen explaining what they've done but won't bother to RTFM.)

So yeah, what goMac said.
