My trustworthy-and-maxxed-out PowerBook Titanium has a busted LCD.
It's no problem since I use an external display, however it does give some trouble.
For every restart I need to close the computer so that it won't split the VRAM bewteen the two displays (the busted LCD and the external monitor), the most challenging part being opening the computer again (because of the broken hinges).

I would like to remove it altogether. Will Mac OS X automatically assign all the VRAM to the external monitor ?

Thx

What kind of applications are you running with a busted old machine that require all the VRAM? It sounds like you should be happy the thing even works. If you're running in closed lid mode, then all VRAM is used by the external display.

Everyday use, all I need really. Let's see, Office, FireFox, Azureus, some CnC: Generals from time to time and the ocasional movie.

I need the VRAM becasue the external monitor runs @1920x1200.

Thing is, the hinges are broken, so opening and closing the lid is quite a pain, specially if you have to do it every time you turn the computer on. Plus if I manage to get rid of the LCD I can put the TiBook beside some books "standing up" without heat concerns, clearing some desk real estate.

Think of it as a MacMini predecesor

Slightly OT question: How far are the hinges broken? What happens if you "take off" aka snap the screen of the TiBook? I'm asking because I'm in the same boat...my TiBook screen is very close to breaking off...

I know, thing is I'm pretty close to breaking the hinges, and I want to get rid of the LCD altogether so I don't have to actually close the lid and then reopen it every time I restart the computer or put it to sleep (the lid needs to be open or else the computer heats up).

Yes it heats up, but the machine supports closed-lid mode. It won't overheat if that's what you're worrying about.

After a few minutes of work, I have a PowerBook Titanium, with no LCD, the computer operates by itself, physically it has no LCD attached.
Anyway, everything works fine, except Mac OS X still thinks I have 2 displays attached.

In Mac OS X, is there -any- way at all to turn off a display ?

Thanks

Done:

TiBook is completely functional, with no LCD.
The solution was hinted by this guy's instructions:

Sleep magnets

* locations:

A tiny cylindric magnet taped to the back of the LCD trips a sensor under the palmrest.

Looking at the back of the LCD with the top edge up, the magnet location relative to the upper LH corner:

* 400 and 500 - right 4 3/4" and down 1 1/4"
* . . . . r-121mm and d-31mm
* 550 and later - right 7 3/4" and down 2 3/4"
* . . . . r-197mm and d-70mm

Those positions of course can also be located on the palmrest ('Book open and facing you) measured from the near righthand corner, left and toward the back. You can trigger sleep with the lid open by placing a magnet there. Heck if you didn't have an exact location you could just slide a magnet around the palmrest until the 'Book nods off.
Hope it helps.
