I think iBooks were originally supposed to run very quietly, maybe without even needing a fan, but I'm not sure. My iBook G4 1.3ghz's fan seems to run about 50% of the time, and will even activate the fan during times when it's sitting idle, on a flat surface. I'm wondering if something is not working right. I thought that my having Folding@home would be a reason for this, but I've had that app on "pause" for the past two months and the fan is still running a lot.

My fan almost never runs. Only when using HandBrake, which I shouldn't be using, because it takes about 24-28 hours to encode a movie...

I think its relative to your CPU usage. Mine has been running full blast for the past hour. I just installed Leopard and am in the process of installing iLife 08. CPU is running 100% and that is why the fan is running so much, I think.
