So the hard drive finally died on my first gen PB G4. The damn thing makes a ton of noise and won't boot so Im going to replace it. Could someone reccomend a good drive that runs at 7200 rpms and has around 100gb of storage. Also is it easy to install?

Just get a Seagate from Newegg. ifixit.com will have the specs of the drive you need and the instructions for your model.

You need an ATA (not an SATA) drive. Seagate's warranty is best (5 years). 100GB 7200 RPM model is available from NewEgg.

The replacement is not very difficult, but you will need a Torx T8 screwdriver.

if its not much more, get the biggest fastest drive you can afford. it will make your G4 go a lot faster. i think hitachi has a 200 gig drive that's seriously fast.

hd's are the weakest point in current machines. If you can jack up the speed, it makes a lot of difference. Plus, OSX goes slower when the drive gets full. (i think barefeats did benchmarks on that awhile ago.)

I've been looking at replacing my 80Gb disk in my 12" for some time now, just saw the "WD Scorpio WD2500BEVE 250 GB" - it's 5400rpm, but 250Gb sounds nice

my powerbook g4 came with an 80 gig 7200rpm 16 meg cache drive that was really fast. But it's like 1/2 as fast as the new 7200 drives.
