I bought my macbook 2.16, 2 weeks ago. I use it on my bed quite often * but I put a book underneath it *. Even when it is on a table or desk the fan goes on quite often even when I am just using adium, safari and microsoft word.

Right now the fan is not on ( so that I can hear it )
Here are my current temps
CPU A 128 degrees f
Heatsink A 121
Heatsink B 121
Enclosure bottom 86
Northbridge 1 112
Northbridge 2 115
Mem Bank A1 108
Harddrive 92

and the fan exhaust is at 1800 rpms

I will try and catch it when the fan is going but - is this normal for a new macbook only running adium and safari?

Yep, sounds normal, you do seem to be running a bit hot and the fan is running a bit fast. I have a Core Duo MacBook so the heat/fan speed might be different at rest.
Signature depreciated.

Hahaha, that's downright chilly. I've gotten mine to the mid 190s.

1800 RPM is the minimum fan speed, and my MacBook frequently idles at about 135-140F, with occasional dips down to 130F if I'm surfing wirelessly on the battery.

In short, your temps are all looking normal.

When you do find the fan running noticeably, start up Activity Monitor and check the CPU load and see what's taking up cycles.

It is up to 4000 rpms I think, and the computer is 92% idle
