Hello all,
About an hour ago, my mac completely stalled and I had to shut it down by holding down the power button. I think it locked up because i had camino open w/ maybe 15 tabs open, Pages, Numbers and TextEdit all open.
I booted it up, and it took a long time to start up, and only a grey screen showed. After about 5 minutes a little folder showed up with the mac logo (the blue one with the big smile on it) and a question mark flashing on the folder.

I'm using an iBook G4, ~12 inch; Mac OS X Tiger.

You didn't harm anything by having that number of applications open. However, your hard drive has a problem of some sort. Start up with the OS X disc and run Disk Utility. Tell us what it says.

So I got Disk Utility open and the only thing unusual thing I can see is that I can't seem to mount my startup disk's partition, then again I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

You probably shouldn't be laughing. If you can't see your disk in Disk Utility when you start from an OS install disk, there's something wrong with your disk. It could be dead and gone. If you can, boot in target disk mode (hold T at boot) and connect via Firewire to another computer to see if you can even see your disk's contents. If you still see nothing, you may very well be hosed.

I won't be able to do that, i don't have a firewire cable and none of my other computers have firewire. I don't think my drive is dead though. In Disk Utility I can see my disk there; my startup disk is shown there and mounted, but the partition (the only partition on the hd) is listed but won't mount. Should I try re-installing the operating system? I have most of my important stuff backed up, so losing everything on the hd isn't much of a problem.
